			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Migrating a site</strong> to a new platform or domain, or implementing a major redesign, is one of the most stressful situations in search engine optimization. The potential for massively impacting organic search traffic and sales is higher during these launches than at any other time. With planning and priority on the SEO impact of the launch, it’s possible to actually improve SEO performance after a major launch event. </p>
<p>However, most sites neglect to include an SEO professional in the planning, design, development and launch phases of the project, typically resulting in a loss of SEO performance post-launch. While an experienced SEO professional can certainly come in afterwards to guide the team through a strategy to revive the site’s SEO performance, this process typically takes three to six months of planning, rework from the design and development teams, and a loss of traffic and revenue in the interim.</p>
<p>Speaking from experience helping clients through many platform changes, redesigns, domain moves and other assorted SEO pitfalls, these are my best tips for arriving at the other end of the launch with your search engine rankings safely intact.</p>
<h3>Migrations on the Same Domain</h3>
<p>Most migrations occur on the same domain, where a site needs to implement a new ecommerce platform perhaps, or is redesigning the site for better branding and usability. Even if the subdomain, domain and top-level domain (&#8220;TLD,&#8221; such as .com) don’t change, the URIs are likely to change in these situations. And anytime a URI changes there will be an impact on SEO. </p>
<p>URIs are the name by which search engines know your pages. It’s how they’re stored in the engines’ indices. Changing those names without warning or helping the engines understand how the new URIs relate to the old URIs they have indexed is like starting all over again with fresh pages that have no history or link popularity. That’s essentially SEO suicide.</p>
<p>The first step is to bring in an SEO professional at the start of the project. Until the wireframe redesign stage, it’s unlikely that the SEO will do much more than absorb information, but that background can be invaluable when it comes time to actually making recommendations. The SEO professional should be involved all the way through design, development, pre-launch testing and post-launch monitoring.</p>
<h3>URLs and Migrations on the Same Domain</h3>
<p>Whenever possible, keep the URLs the same. In a cosmetic redesign, where the same pages are getting new skins, this should be entirely possible. In a more complex redesign or a platform migration, URIs are likely to change. When there’s a one-to-one match between pages, make every effort to use URL rewrites to convert the new URI to the same old URI that the engines know and love for that page. For example, if a site has a sweater category page before and after the redesign or migration, and the purpose of that page will remain relatively constant, then the platform’s new URL of http://www.jillsclothingsite.com/sweater-x147gh?cid=43 should be able to be rewritten to the pre-migration URL of http://www.jillsclothingsite.com/sweaters/. Even if URL rewrites are only done for the most important pages of the site – those that drive significant organic search traffic and sales and the major category pages – it’s better than changing every URI on the site. Protect the majority of your organic search traffic and sales by keeping the same URIs for the pages that drive the most organic search traffic and sales.</p>
<p>If the URIs have to change, 301 redirects are the best bet to preserve as much of the site’s link popularity and transfer it to the new URIs. This transfer is critical to not only infuse the new URIs with link popularity and to communicate to the search engines that the URI that they have indexed has moved and should be de-indexed and replaced with this new URI. If you’re unable to use 301 redirects for some very important reason, use cross-domain canonical tags — <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=139394">explained here in Google Webmaster Tools</a>. It’s important to note that canonical tags are suggestions to the search engines while 301 redirects are commands, so be certain that 301 redirects are truly not a viable option before settling for canonical tags.</p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=139394"><span class="with_caption full_width"> </span></a> </p>
<p>Some marketers try to play it safe by running the old and new sites simultaneously to ensure that users don’t encounter broken links from various marketing channels. Sites that do this must apply 301 redirects to the old URIs, or the old and new sites will be considered full-site copies of each other and could face duplicate content issues. At the very least, the engines will serve a confused mixture of the old and new URLs to searchers, throwing off the site’s ability to measure the success of the transition to the new site. At worst, the site could drop out of rankings entirely because the new site will be indexed based on internal links but the old orphaned site will have the benefit of the external links its pages have earned over the years. So a few of the strongest old pages may still rank, but the new pages won’t have the benefit of any external links to help them rank and drive traffic and sales.</p>
<h3>Navigation and Migrations on the Same Domain</h3>
<p>Oftentimes a new design rejiggers the navigation, adding or removing categories and subcategories, merging or splitting categories and subcategories, adding or removing rollovers or other features. Check the URI implications of any navigation change very carefully. Copy all of the URLs in the header navigation and all the URLs in the side navigation and compare the list with the URLs produced on the development site for the header and side navigation. If there’s a large degree of change, expect a similarly large degree of risk to the SEO performance of the site. Push to keep the same URI or at lease do 301 redirects to preserve as much link popularity and trust as possible.</p>
<p>Once the SEO professional can get access to the development or testing environment, he or she will want to identify how many URIs are changing site-wide and whether new sources of duplicate content are being generated. The easiest way to do this is to crawl the site — <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://developer.practicalecommerce.com/articles/3162-8-SEO-Reasons-to-Crawl-Your-Clients-Sites">see &#8220;8 Reasons to Crawl Your Clients&#8217; Sites,&#8221;</a> my previous article on that topic. Filtering and sorting in particular tend to generate unwanted pockets of duplicate content, as do some implementations of breadcrumb navigation. Crawling the site and sorting the list of resulting URLs alphabetically will show where multiples of the same base URI are duplicated with parameters of subdirectories to enable these features. </p>
<p>A simple canonical tag referring back to the default URI will resolve any of these sources of duplicate content. In this case, a 301 redirect is undesirable because the URIs have to exist, — i.e., not redirect back to the base URI — for human usability. For example, placing a 301 redirect on a URI that sorts the products on a category page so that products are shown by price would result in the user simply ending up on the default sweater page again without the sorting order they requested. That would be terrible usability. Because the canonical tag affects only search engine crawlers, it’s a safe alternative to canonicalizing in instances where customers need to see the page but it’s redundant to search engines. Make sure to identify and resolve duplicate content issues before the site launches, however, because once the horses are out of the barn — the duplicate content is live and indexed — it’s a lot harder to get them back in that de-indexation barn.</p>

I don’t know about you, but whenever someone makes the promise to teach you how to quit your job and become an Internet millionaire, I get a little suspicious. As someone who earns a living through virtual work, I know just how much time, dedication, and hard work it takes to be successful. I find that many of the books out there on this topic are nothing more than a step above scams.</p>
<p>This is <strong>not</strong> the case with <em>Click Millionaires</em>, but that said, make sure you read this entire review before pulling out your credit card. <em>Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book to review.</em></p>

But today the phrase ‘Click Millionaire’ captures the revolutionary idea that lifestyle benefits like independence, security, and self-confidence–formerly only available to the wealthy–are now available to <em>anyone who chooses to build a successful lifestyle business online</em>. As you can see from the definition above, money is important to Click Millionaires, but it’s not the only thing that matters to the ‘new rich.’ Money is not the destination on you life’s road trip; it’s just the gas to help you enjoy the journey.” – Scott Fox, <em>Click Millionaires</em></p>

<p>First, before purchasing any book, I think it’s important to understand the target audience. In the case of <em>Click Millionaires</em>, you’ll find this book helpful if you are a beginner. <em>Click Millionaires </em>gives a great overview of all the ways you can get started making money online. He covers blogging, podcasting, creating videos, freelancing and more – all good options for people unhappy at their office jobs and hoping to get started earning money online.If you are already well-versed in the world of making money online, though, <em>Click Millionaires</em> is not going to be as useful to you.</p>
<p>Scott’s book is great about giving you brief looks at all the avenues you can take for success online, but whatever you choose, you’re going to have to do more research to find out exactly how to optimize your time online. If Scott went into that kind of detail in his book, it would be  be thousands and thousands of pages! So be warned – if you decide, for example, that podcasting is the right route for you, you’re going to have to become more educated about it. You can’t simply read Scott’s book and turn into a podcasting millionaire. What is great, however, is that Scott gives readers tons of resources for finding more information. He sets you up for success.</p>
<p>The most valuable part of <em>Click Millionaires</em> is Part Five: How to Find Your Niche on the Internet. Choosing a niche is super important to making money online, and I believe that Scott explains how to do this very well. I also love all the interviews he includes in this book. It’s great to hear about stories straight from the people who’ve found success online.</p>
<p>I don’t agree with every piece of advice in this book. In fact, I think that <em>Click Millionaires</em> makes the same mistake that make “make money online” books and information products make – it sounds too easy. Making money online is anything but easy. Can you do it? Can you become a millionaire online?</p>
<p>Yes, I think you can. But it takes years of hard work and most people will never get there. The people who have become overnight successes online caught lightening in a bottle. <p><i>Internet marketing expert James Schramko recently got together with another seasoned online marketing strategist Luke Moulton to deliver a podcast detailing what really goes on behind the scenes of a podcast.</i></p>

<p> In a recently posted podcast on his blog InternetMarketingSpeed.com, online marketing master James Schramko interviews veteran podcaster <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.internetmarketingspeed.com/how-to/the-ugly-truth-about-podcasting-a-behind-the-scenes-look-at-what-really-goes-on/?utm_source=PRWebutm_medium=pr-ivy87utm_campaign=ims" title="Luke Moulton">Luke Moulton</a> on the ins and outs of making a podcast, in the process, revealing some less well known details about the experience. The podcast is replete with insider knowledge with Schramko and Moulton providing tips and warnings about the entire endeavor. The podcast effectively primes anybody considering taking up podcasting.</p>
<p>Schramko and Moulton have fellow marketing expert Tim Reid as one of their common denominators. Reid is Schramko’s podcasting partner on Freedom Ocean.com and was Moulton’s co-host in online talk show Small Business Big Marketing. Reid’s name comes up several times in the interview as the two swap anecdotes on their respective podcasting experiences.</p>
<p>The discussion, which runs for about 45 minutes, thoroughly covers the topic of podcasting. It answers many beginner questions, such as “How professional do you need to go for your first podcast?”, “Does a recording studio help?”, “How do you invite interviewees to record with you?” and “<a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.internetmarketingspeed.com/how-to/the-ugly-truth-about-podcasting-a-behind-the-scenes-look-at-what-really-goes-on/?utm_source=PRWebutm_medium=pr-ivy87utm_campaign=ims" title="How do you start a podcast">How do you start a podcast</a>?”. It also furnishes key information on technical matters such as the Apple iTunes algorithm, podcast plugin installation and retro-adding to iTunes, <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.internetmarketingspeed.com/how-to/the-ugly-truth-about-podcasting-a-behind-the-scenes-look-at-what-really-goes-on/?utm_source=PRWebutm_medium=pr-ivy87utm_campaign=ims" title="podcasting formats">podcasting formats</a>, etc.</p>
<p>Alluding to the time Schramko guested on the Small Business Big Marketing Show, Moulton lists some of the benefits of his podcasting experience, “Getting to talk to experts, learning from it, and certainly, building authority as well. It’s been a fabulous vehicle for that.”</p>
<p>Schramko describes that particular guesting stint as his first involvement with a more professional podcast, complete with an official bump-in and a disclaimer bump-out and executed in a professional studio. Upon receiving a wave of sales after the interview, he realized the power of having that audience.</p>
<p>Building an audience is essential in making an effective podcast and Moulton has some tips on how to successfully do that. He points out that consistency is a key factor, advising podcasters to have 4 to 5 shows a month. He also highlights the importance of getting good interviewees with good stories to tell, and then leveraging their audience as well.</p>
<p>Schramko explains, “Podcast is a traffic source rather than a product. For me, having a traffic source has been really beneficial for the rest of my business.” Both he and Moulton agree that podcasting is a fantastic platform to build authority and trust. It can be a very powerful business tool when done correctly. “It’s good to have a strategy when you set up a podcast, have an understanding of where it leads to and what comes next,” states Schramko.</p>
<p>Moulton expresses his thoughts on the growth of podcasting. “I think it’s a growing trend,” he observes.  “Podcasting is a very popular medium to consume content.” He also mentions that with Apple and the way it is going with its technological innovations, podcasting will only keep on increasing in popularity.</p>
<p>The two also discuss the iTunes ranking algorithm, which is not published, unlike the Google algorithm. Moulton shares his conclusions on how an iTunes show can rank well, mentioning the number of people looking at a podcast iTunes profile and subscribing to the feed, as well as frequency of podcast episodes, to be some of the elements that can influence ranking.</p>
<p>The discussion touches on topics such as professional podcasting production values, the double-headed recording technique, podcasting equipment, Facebook campaigns and Authority Leverage, plus many more. When it comes to the option to polarise an audience, Moulton advises, “I think being yourself, the people who enjoy your format and the way you talk will gravitate to you, and they’re the audience that you want.”</p>

You might be surprised that even the smallest changes can make a significant impact on your bottom line.</p>
<p>To get you started, here are seven ways you can energize your program and boost your performance marketing results.</p>
<h2>1. Make Sure You Have Fresh Creative</h2>
<p>Check the last time you updated ad copy or rolled out a brand new campaign. It may seem obvious, but talk to any publisher and you’d learn that many advertisers don’t regularly update their programs with new creative. If it’s been more than three months, it may be time for a refresh.</p>
<p>While you’re conducting your ad copy freshness check, take a closer look at the back-end analytics to see how well the ad has been performing. Assess its performance throughout the life of the campaign to gauge how successful it was out of the gate.</p>
<p>You may also want to consider what your competitors are doing in terms of creative. Unbeknownst to you, it could be that publishers prefer your competitors because they have better creative that’s updated more often.</p>
<p>Additionally, consider automatically setting expiration dates on your ad copy and send reminders to publishers to alert them that there is new creative available.</p>
<p>Finally, if you have a resource issue when it comes to creative, ask your affiliate marketing network for help. You might be able to tap into cost effective, professional design resources without breaking your budget.</p>
<h2>2. Promote Exclusive Affiliate Offers</h2>
<p>When you steer consumers toward a great offer and make it exclusive to the affiliate channel, you’re not just driving commissions, you’re demonstrating your commitment to your publishers. This, in turn, inspires and motivates them on your behalf.</p>
<p>Remember that the affiliate channel is a great testing ground. If you have a new product, a new brand or just want to increase sales in a specific area, your affiliate partners can probably help.</p>
<p>What will inspire your publishers most is a truly valuable consumer offer. You know what sells — your publishers want to know that too. Let them know what your hottest products are and offer the affiliate channel an exclusive promotion from time to time that is designed just for the affiliate channel.</p>
<h2>3. Strengthen Your Ties To Publishers</h2>
<p>Do you communicate with your publishers directly? If you don’t, you should. Work with your performance marketing network account manager to foster closer relationships with the publishers in your program.</p>
<p>When you know your publishers, you will stay top of mind with them, and you will be able to better understand and address their needs.  Keeping the lines of communication open can help overcome any potential obstacles before they impact your program performance.</p>
<h2>4. Increase Your Incentives</h2>
<p>You can sweeten your incentive program through special bonuses. For example, for those publishers that refer $1000 in sales next month, be sure to compensate them with a $50 bonus.</p>
<p><strong> </strong>Not sure what will truly incent your publishers? Try different strategies, watch your competitors and, most importantly, get the advice of your publishers.  Simply ask them what will inspire them to focus more on your company and brand.</p>
<h2>5. Recognize And Reward Your Top Publishers</h2>
<p>While your top publishers are already reaping the benefits of working with your brand, consider additional bonuses that recognize their efforts so you can further leverage their success.</p>
<p>These incentives can reward publishers for various activities, including the obvious sales-driven incentives, as well as longevity with your brand, amount of website traffic generated and other measurable milestones.</p>
<p>What’s important to note here is that top successful publishers have a lot of options and can pick and choose from a lot of brands. With this in mind, you always want to cultivate strong affiliate relationships with your star performers. Some extra acknowledgement can go a long way.</p>
<h2>6. Reinvigorate Inactive Publishers</h2>
<p>While it may be tempting to dismiss inactive publishers so you can focus on the more productive ones, don’t be so eager to cast away the lower performers. After all, they might be diamonds in the rough for your brand. Your affiliate marketing network should make it easy for you to see your top gainers and decliners on a year-over-year basis. Make sure to look at that information regularly.</p>
<p>To bring the inactive or declining publishers back to life on behalf of your brand — and to more appropriately determine if they’re worth your investment — reach out to them first and try to find out why they have focused less on your brand. Is it just “out of sight out of mind” or is there something else at the root of the trend.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, you can also consider checking in with your network account manager to better determine if there are other issues looming with these particular publishers that should be addressed.  They might have information about the publisher that would be good for you to know.</p>
<h2>7. Understand Your Mobile Traffic</h2>
<p>While mobile commerce is still very much in its early stages, all signs indicate this part of the market is poised to really take off over the next few years. By getting your mobile affiliate programs in place now, you can start to reap the early adopter benefits, get familiar with the nuances of mobile affiliate marketing, and expand your reach through a new network of mobile publishers.</p>
<p>Your affiliate partners could be your most cost-effective route for testing the mobile waters. Just make sure to check with your affiliate network to ensure that your affiliate tracking is working from a mobile device.</p>
<p>In addition to evaluating your performance marketing results on a regular basis, it’s also a good idea to revisit these optimization recommendations every quarter to make sure your affiliate program is running at top speed.</p>
